Fermi was not asking for ET to turn up on our doorstep; he would have been pleased to just receive a message. So forget space junk, etc., and keep listening via SETI or other intergalactic electromagnetic detectors. If they are not communicating with each other, it is bloody unlikely that they are commuting about in the vastness of space.
