Here is a straight-forward way of getting a handle of how indiscriminate an attack is and, in the case of Gaza, it does NOT support your assertion, "about equal numbers of civilians vs militants killed."

Here's how it works: Assume a 50:50 ratio of men to women in the general population, and a nearly 99:1 in the Al Qassam brigades. The difference between male and female casualties can be assumed to be those discriminately killed, the rest of the males, and the females and the children, have been indisciminantly killed. Using the health ministry statistic (which maot observers consider reliable), at the beginning of the assault on Gaza, the reult was above one discriminate for every ten indiscriminate. It has since level off at one for every five.

Yes, urban warfare means collateral damage, but there are ways of keeping the ratio well below 1:5.
