I heard that story a long time ago, but something always bug me about it. Now I think it is that, the "yeah"s are not equal. The second must be said in a lower register or there is no negative effect. The same holds for "right". The lower register seem to signal that, "I should not be taken on my word for this." It is usual underscored by a wobble of the head.
