I meant to add: the knotting occurs when the quantum fluctuations in space (-time?) , are large enough to get tangled* (tied) up with each other before fading. Sort of like two "perfect waves" interacting.

*I have avoided the word "tangled" because this process is not to be confused with entanglment (which, honestly, I do not understand).
