The Japanese atrocities in the Philippines are legion. When the Japanese, holed up in many of the city's historic buildings, refused to surrender, MacArthur called in the bombers rather than waiting them out. He had promised that the liberation (de-occupation) of the Philippines would not be a diversion from the main battle plan for the Pacific Theater; in his mind, patience was not an option.
