The option favored by many of the Allies military leaders was to blockade Japan, rather than invade. Indeed, even the contingency planning for an invasion did not envisage anything earlier than December 1945. It was widely expect Japan would fold before then. When Stalin committed in Brandenburg to join the fray on August 8th, Truman wrote home saying this assure the boys would be hoe before Christmas. He was right.
