The way I understand this, is that there were other distinct lineages, but none of them could rise to two challenges: the competition with the LUCA lineage and the rapid adaptation needed to survive major rapid changes in the environment.

However, we cannot yet preclude that another lineage will someday be detected in some remote corner of the Earth that represents another lineage.
